Chapter Thirteen
I pulled the door open and stepped inside. The interior lights came on automatically. Zephyr came in after me and shut the door and then crouched. It felt strange to have him at my side. Sen was sitting on top of the building, keeping an eye on the agents we'd tied up.
The last time we'd attacked a building, Zephyr had been forced to stay on the outside. Finally he'd pulled the wall apart to come inside, and he'd had to keep destroying walls to get through to me.
This time he walked beside me, and it felt more than a little strange that I wasnât alone. The lights announced our presence, but there were no more cameras as far as I could tell. There were only rooms on our left. The corridor we were in headed around to the right rather than straight through the heart of the building, but we followed it anyway.
Opening the first door revealed a large gym area where agents could work out. It was empty. Whoever normally used it was either gone for the night or somewhere else in the building. The next door opened on a small swimming pool, the water calm and still. I shut the door and moved on.
We passed a storage room next, spare weights, and even a couple of basketballs in there. While I was impressed with the equipment, it wasn't the sort of thing we were here for.
Onward we went, turning a corner and heading even farther around the outside. This side had a few more doors, but only after we'd gone past what I figured was the back of the swimming pool. It opened out into a large open-plan office. I went inside.
Again, the room was empty and the desks were clear. I went up to the nearest one and tried to break the lock. I couldn't see inside well enough to try my last trick. Zephyr came closer and simply smacked the desk. The whole piece of furniture cracked in two with an almighty bang.
I whirled around to face the door in case anyone had heard us, but no one appeared. Zephyr pulled out the drawers. There were a few papers in it. Half-filled in reports on investigations into mythicals, emails about what a fire salamander looked like and how it was different from normal newts and salamanders.
We moved on to the next and the next, finding similar documents. This was clearly an office of agents similar to the one we had in LA. The agents were tasked with capturing mythicals and taking them somewhere else. If that was so, it made sense why Jacobs had been stationed here in the past.
The fourth desk revealed a laptop, and I flicked it open. It was password-protected, which wasn't a surprise. We searched the desk for something with the password written on it, with no luck.
Frowning, we moved on, but not a single desk had anything we could hack into easily.
Let's just take one and see what else we
